World War I

USII.5c

This three-lesson set is designed to completely cover SOL USII.5c. The first lesson’s content focuses on the reasons why the US abandoned neutrality to join the Allies in WWI, and the skill focus is on analysis of maps and charts, using the 3TC map analysis strategy. The second lesson also focuses heavily on skill USII.1f, identifying cause and effect relationships. Students produce a storyboard or cartoon panel that explains multiple causes and effects of the United States’ involvement in WWI. The third lesson looks at the United States’ leadership at the end of the war. Using President Wilson’s 14 points as a starting point, students analyze several primary and secondary documents (Treaty of Versailles, Wilson’s speech in favor of the League of Nations) to determine how effective a leader the US was at the end of the war. The lesson ends with a short SOL-formatted quiz that incorporates both content and skill-based questions.

This two-lesson set is designed to completely cover SOL VUS 9b, the United States’ role/ involvement in World War I. Lesson 1 has students analyzing multiple documents in a DBQ, and synthesizing that information with speech excerpts to examine the reasons why the US moved from neutrality to involvement between 1914-1917. The lesson ends with a guided writing response. Lesson 2 builds on the practice of analyzing and synthesizing documents, this time looking at the US’ role during and after WWI, and culminates in a capstone writing assignment.
